UI fonts must remain highly legible at tiny sizes (11px to 14px) and across low-resolution screens. Key features include a high x-height (tall lowercase letters), open apertures (whitespace inside letter shapes like 'c' and 'e'), and distinctive glyph shapes to avoid confusion between 'I', 'l', and '1'.
Inter was specifically designed by Rasmus Andersson for user interfaces. It features a tall x-height, low contrast stroke widths for clean rendering on pixels, and tabular numerals, making it perfect for dashboard metrics and alignable tables.
To keep loading speeds fast, restrict weights to: Regular (400) for body text and inputs, Medium (500) for secondary UI controls/subheaders, and Semi-Bold (600) or Bold (700) for primary headings and buttons.
