Modern Interface Giants: Inter and Roboto
Interface designers frequently debate between choosing Inter or Roboto. Both are exceptional, free, open-source sans-serifs, but they are built with different aesthetic theories and technical designs.
Design Principles
Roboto was designed by Google for Android. It has mechanical, structured curves and a slightly taller x-height, making it highly readable in vertical feed templates and lists. It feels geometric yet friendly.
Inter was engineered by Rasmus Andersson specifically for computer screens and user interfaces. It features circular geometry, wide letter widths, and advanced contextual alternates (e.g., separating capital 'I' from lowercase 'l'), yielding superior readability at tiny sizes.
Legibility Features
Inter includes built-in features that make it ideal for app dashboards:
- Distinguishable Glyphs: It separates capital 'I', lowercase 'l', and number '1' to prevent reading errors.
- Tabular Numerals: It supports monospaced numbers, keeping data columns aligned in charts and tables.
- Optical Sizing: Its curves adjust dynamically at different sizes to preserve readability.
Test their rendering on dashboard components in our UI Font Finder and Legibility Tester. Seeing them side-by-side in login, header, and table mockups makes it easier to choose the right fit for your app.
